Specialty Camps at the Complex

Summer camp is a time for amazing experiences, new memories, and days filled with lots of fun and laughter! Through interactions with other children and leadership driven staff, your child has the opportunity to develop lifelong skills that will help them tackle their future!! Our goal over the summer is to ensure child and parent satisfaction. Your child will experience days filled with creativity, learning, active interaction, and friendships.

Reading Giraffe Camp

Fort Mill YMCA at the Complex
6/10/24 - 7/19/24
VIEW

Reading Giraffe Camp (ages 3-7) 9am-12pm

Reading Giraffe is the place where books run wild! Developed by Derick Wilder, a local children’s author and educator, our mission is to create lifelong readers by immersing children in picture books, turning tales into interactive, exciting adventures in learning. Each day includes a host of creative, fun children’s stories, from the classics to current titles to Derick’s own works.

The foundation of each class is a collaborative reading session, where we read with, not to, campers and encourage them to dive into each story. Utilizing The Whole Book Approach, we examine the picture book art and include spelling exercises, vocabulary words, and creative projects. In addition, campers participate in mini-plays, nature walk-n-reads, and fun games, all based on the storylines and characters we read about. Campers should bring a water bottle and a healthy snack, and wear sneakers, sunscreen, and a hat, as each day includes outdoor time and fun activities that get the campers moving.
